How can I work out my lower abs for summer?

Sara B asked:

So summer is coming up, and I’m wondering how I can work my lower abs so they can look good. They’re not too bad, just a little flab.
What exercises should I do?

    Slim down – remove fat

First of all, there is no such muscle as “lower abs”. The rectus abdominus is a single muscle.

Second. Spot reduction of fat is impossible. Abs are built in the kitchen, not the gym. A healthy diet is much more important to defined abs than targeted ab work.

That being said, planks, wood-chops, swiss-ball crunches, and Russian twists are excellent abdominal exercises.

No need to overdo it. 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times per week is plenty of ab work. Combine this with an exercise program of weight training and cardio (preferably HIIT) and you’ll have great abs in no time.
