How to Lose Weight

Exercise and Weight Loss
Jump in and work out. Make a commitment to do a minimum of 30 minutes of cardio a day, 3-5x per week. Or if you don’t like to exercise, give up 300-500 calories a day.
Remember, the key to weight loss is to burn more calories than you consume.

Crossing the 21 threshold stinks, I did it a few years ago and it seemed to be the point where I lost my body for a while too. For me, I know my metabolism slowed and on top of that I began going out to bars and drinking, so I am sure that alcohol had a lot to do with my extra poundage. Now I keep a food/exercise journal. It is kind of time consuming because I look up the calories of everything I eat and burn off with online resources, but it is a huge payoff because I had no understanding of portion control before and I thought walking to and from class was enough exercise, hah! The changes I made were going out to eat less and when I do I bring my own tupperware now and pop atleast half of the entree into it at the beginning. (I always felt a little silly asking for half boxed up to begin with, so I just bring the “big purse” and do it myself, haha). I love to cook, so when I crave the restaurant atmosphere I invite my girlfriends over and cook a nice fresh, healthy dinner for everyone and we split the cost so its not killer expensive. Don’t be too strict with your diet because it will be impossible to keep. I just allow myself a little more HEALTHY calories on days when I hit the pavement for a good run or go to the gym, and on my sedentary days (there are still some of those) I really try to eat less. I eat whenever I am hungry, but if I know I have already eaten a lot that day I have something like a cup of vegetable broth with scallions (its like 5-10 calories but satisfying). I plan whan I will eat in advance (using my trusty calorie calculator) so I don’t over indulge. It was definately a shocker the first day or two when I strictly totalled my calorie intake up (those 6 cheeze its, spoon full of mac n’ cheese, and half a hot dog I used to grave on while making lunch for the kids at my daycare really add up and can waste a healthy snakc spot!) I eat a little protein and whole grain then lots of veggies at every meal. Then snacks I have either a little protein or a little whole grain and fruits and veggies. I shoot for breakfast(300cal), lunch(500cal.), dinner(400cal.), then two snacks at 150 or so calories each. Days when I hit the gym I bump up my afternoon (preworkout) snack to 250 or 300 calories and I make sure the calories I add are healthy protein.
I like to try to do cardio three times a week (i’d love to do more but as of lately it hasn’t been happening). My favorite is running on the treadmill at the gym because I can force myself to up the tempo by changing the incline level or my MPH. I like to vary it a lot to keep my body guessing. If I run outside I add bursts of speed work, and I find hills to run on too (I just find without the digits in front of me that I run much slower). I sometimes to the machine ircuit at my schools gym but I usually do free weight exercises at my house. I bought two sets of dumb bells and I use a small (kickball sized) ball for ab workouts. You can get a ton of ideas for at home exercises on the internet or in magazines like Shape, Fitness, Self, Muscle and FItness Hers, so I won’t add those descriptions since this is already so lengthy… Hope this helps you and lots of luck!! : )

Wow, that’s a lot of weight gained in just one year.
Start making small changes which are better to stick to. e.g. smaller portions, water instead of reg or diet soda, less fried foods, not eating late and definitely becoming more active even if it’s just going for 30 min. walks. If anything, this will help you not gain more weight.
Make better choices. It helped me to eat a lot of salad with my meals. Making my own salad dressing was a plus. One simple one is to mix in a blender some olive oil, garlic and a good balsamic vinegar – the choices are endless.
You are too young to let yourself go so start now before it gets worse and more difficult to get rid of.
