Difference in metabolism for genders or something?

Ron X asked:

Whenever I eat something fatty, such as pizza or cake, I instantly gain like a pound.
My sister ate 1000 calories worth of cookies yesterday, she then ate a whole box of brownies, half a container of ice cream, pizza and a whole pumpkin pie- Total estimated at over 4000 calories
And she didn’t gain any weight

Is there a difference in metabolism or something? She doesn’t exercise at all. She’s very slim also.

FYI i’m a guy

In general, males will have faster metabolisms than females because they naturally have more muscle.

However, your sister may simply have a very fast metabolism, even though she is female. Also consider, what you eat today won’t show as pounds gained on the scales tomorrow…it could take 2 or 3 days to see the result of a particular day’s food/beverage consumption.

Daily fluctuations in water weight are sometimes mistaken for gains/losses in fat, but aren’t always the case. You can go up and down 1 – 4 lbs from one day to the next, and not be actually gaining or losing that much fat. That’s why many people only weigh once a week instead of daily.

Your sister is clearly very lucky and an exception. Generally guys have a faster metabolisms than girls because they naturally have more muscle mass and are larger and therefore burn more calories during the day even if they don’t exercise. That being said genetics also play a role. How you process food has a lot to do with various hormones. Some people’s hormone levels allow them to eat a lot and not gain weight while other people gain weight very easily.

If it makes you feel any better your sister’s eating will most likely catch up with her as she gets older because women’s metabolisms generally slow down especially around menopause.

If you want to speed up your own metabolism the best way to do that would be to try and build up muscle mass because the more muscle you have the more calories you will naturally burn everyday.
